We can all go to MIT!
by Phantom Stranger inthis month, mit officially launches its opencourseware initiative (at ocw.mit.edu).
with opencourseware, which has been in pilot mode for one year, mit has put a large amount of its course materials, including videos of lectures and classes, online for anyone to access freely.
this is a brilliant win/win proposition for mit in nearly every way.

Emergence from the WTS - suggestions
by Phantom Stranger ini speak as a "raised-in-the-jws" adult, out for almost 20 years.
i am writing this post in the earnes hope that someone emerging from the jw's can benefit from some small part of my experience (not because i think i know the only right way to leave...).
one of our big inhibitions against leaving is the fear of losing all of one's support network.

Hilarious blurb on a NYT Magazine story
by Phantom Stranger inthis is a review of an article in the sept. 14 new york times magazine:.
devout readers of lucky will be glad to note that "god is not at all opposed to a fashion magazine or its format.
" so argues laurie whaley, anyway; she's the woman behind revolve, a new edition of the new testament that's written for teenage girls and designed to look like ym.

Do XJW's contribute in our communities?
by Phantom Stranger inthere was an earlier thread http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/58324/1.ashx that asked how we choose to contribute to the community, after having been raised as jw's.
i was impressed by the efforts of many of those who posted.
i was also surprised that so many didn't post.

JW emotional probs and Borderline Personality Disorder
by Phantom Stranger ini have seen many posts here about addiction psychology and its relationsship to jw's.
this is an interesting area... and i tend to be a bit sceptical simply due to the "trendyness" that addiction psych is experiencing.
i personally see links to low-intensity borderline personality disorder (high-intensity seems to lead to self-mutilation and suicide attempts, the latter of which we have all heard about).

JW's oversimplifying the complex
by Phantom Stranger inaccording to mike kropveld, director general of (of info sect), this decrease in popularity could be due to, among other factors, recent accusations of negligence in sexual assault cases that have given jehovah's witnesses bad publicity... recruitment seems to have been fruitful at the last international convention of jehovah's witnesses, which took place at the olympic stadium this past june 26-29. close to 35,000 members, from canada, the united states and several francophone countries gathered there.
"people join the ranks of these groups mainly during transitional periods of their lives, when they have existential questions," explains mike kropveld.
"they need to have something to believe in, to belong to a group.
